What to Pack for Mobile Hunting: The Complete Guide

Mobile Hunting Checklist

Mobile hunting is a challenging yet rewarding experience for many hunters as it allows you to explore new places. Since there is a lot of hunting gear you need to carry on an active hunt, many people wonder exactly what they need in their pack to have a successful hunt yet remain as lightweight as possible. To help, ERLEBNISWELT-FLIEGENFISCHEN Hunting Expert Mike Anderson walks through his hunting checklist when he goes hunting.

Types of Mobile Hunting

There are two main types of mobile hunting: hang-on treestand and tree saddle hunting. No matter which type of mobile hunting you prefer, you must have a lineman’s rope and safety harness packed inside your bag. This will make sure you stay attached to the tree and safe. Each type of mobile hunting requires a slightly different exterior pack setup.

Hang-On Treestand Pack Set Up

When choosing to use a hang-on tree stand, it’s important to consider the weight and how easy it is to hang on the tree. After you fill your pack with everything except your climbing sticks and treestand, it’s time to attach these to the exterior. To pack, fold the treestand flat and use the attachment straps to connect around your pack. Then, take the climbing sticks and store them flat—attach these to your pack using the included straps. You’ll also want a safety harness to keep you secure—you can put this on right before you head into the field.

Tree Saddle Pack Set Up

Using a tree saddle when hunting is becoming more popular each season because they’re more lightweight than a treestand and allow 360-degree movement. You can choose to wear the saddle out to your location or pack it in your bag. Along with the saddle, you’ll need a saddle platform, which is where you’ll place your feet. After you fill your pack with everything except your platform and climbing sticks, it’s time to attach these to the exterior. Attach this platform to the exterior of your pack using the straps that attach to the tree. Last, lay your climbing sticks flat on top of the platform and attach them to your pack using the tree straps.

What to Pack: Hunting Pack List

✔ Hunting Pack: Look for a pack that has a solid frame to give you stability and multiple storage compartments for easy organizing. Our Hunting Experts compiled a list of the best hunting packs to help you narrow down your options.

✔ Binoculars:  You can wear these to your hunting location with a binocular harness, but you can also pack them inside your bag too. When choosing the right pair of binoculars, you’ll want to consider the magnification power and objective lens diameter that pairs with your hunt.

✔ Mapping Tool or Handheld GPS: You might be entering areas where there’s very limited cell service, so it’s always a good idea to have a GPS option for safety.

✔ Rangefinder: This is a must for getting accurate distance data so you can properly aim and hit your target. When choosing a rangefinder, keep in mind the range, zoom, and other features to help make your hunt successful.

✔ Headlamp: Often, you’ll be walking through the field or setting up your stand in the dark, and a headlamp will keep your hands free.

✔ Bow Hanger: Your bow gets heavy, so twisting a bow hanger into the tree gives you an accessible place to hang your bow.

✔ Wind Detector: Knowing the direction of the wind is important and using a wind detector won’t spook the animals. Plus, they’re compact to save room in your pack.

✔ A Multi-Tool: This is really handy to have in case you need to tighten a bolt on the stand or perform other general tasks.

✔ Lineman’s Rope: Be sure to pack this on the top because you’ll need it right away for set up.

✔ Extra Rope: Packing an additional rope is always a good idea because you’ll always find a use like hauling your bow to the stand or tying something off.

✔ Bug Protection: There’s nothing worse than getting into the stand and being bothered by mosquitoes. Using a scent-free mosquito repeller from Thermacell is a great choice to avoid detection from game while fending off bugs.

✔ Water Bottle: It’s really important to stay hydrated when in the stand or saddle. Mike’s go-to option is a YETI water bottle because it retains a cold temperature for extended periods.

✔ Baby Wipes: This essential can often be overlooked, but baby wipes can be really convenient when nature calls or you have to clean up for your in-field trophy picture.
