We don’t give out a “Didn’t Mess It Up” award, but I wish we did. Hoka’s light and fast trail racer, the Evo Mafate 2 actually gets better than the first version, thanks to some minor updates. True to the remote region along the Diagnole des Fous route that gives the shoe its name, the Mafate is made for aggressive running on technical terrain.
The highly durable Kevlar-infused Matryx upper gets a few tweaks to increase comfort over long miles. While many Hokas fall on the narrow end of the spectrum, the Evo Mafate 2 is quite a bit roomier. Testers praised the extra space, especially in the toe box.
The ride of the shoe is largely unchanged. The tall stack height provides plenty of cushioning and protection. The rubberized foam midsole provides a soft landing for comfort, but with increased energy return to go fast. Testers liked the heel cushioning overall, though they needed some time to get used to the soft feeling. “Heel cushioning in this shoe was one of the best I've ever run in, absolutely no pain or discomfort on any surface,” Said one tester. “The forefoot cushioning was soft enough to be comfortable, yet firm enough to get traction when starting out.”
A Roomier Hoka
The main updates in the Evo Mafate 2 focus on increasing comfort. The tough Kevlar upper is more of a mesh than the fabric sheet of the original version. You can actually see through it. A soft, stretchy panel over the top of the toes allows the shoe to expand with the foot during each step.
One of the biggest issues I hear from people that have run in Hokas is that they love the cushioning, but the fit is always too narrow. This shoe has a roomier toe box that alleviated crowding issues testers have had with other Hokas. “The nail on my second toe normally turns black with new shoes, especially size 13,” said one tester. “My actual size is 13.5, but this shoe fit me perfectly around my narrow heel and wide forefoot.”
Aggressive Traction
The tread on the Evo Mafate 2 is designed to bite into any surface. Testers liked how the sharp 5mm lugs clawed muddy and sloppy surfaces. The Vibram Megagrip rubber also gave them confidence when dancing across wet rock slabs. To save weight, the Evo Mafate 2 swaps rubber for lugged midsole foam under the arch of the foot, but the soft material didn’t cause any reduction in traction. One tester loved the shoe’s performance in all conditions, noting that it held steady in mud, through stream crossings, and over steep downhills.

The Evo Mafate 2 is damn near perfect but, while testers liked the fit and comfort of the shoe, they had trouble maintaining that fit. Many of our testers found an issue in the lacing system. The smooth, flat laces loosen over time, causing testers’ feet to slip inside the shoe.
