A Part of Hearst Digital Media Boston and London, Krifchin ran her debut marathon in Hamburg in 2:33:30. It was a controlled effort, with a first half of 1:16:38 and a second half of 1:16:52, suggesting the former Syracuse University middle-distance star has much room to improve.

Krifchin started her trials build-up in great shape. On October 31, she won the Rock ’n’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon in 1:09:51. Although that was a PR by just more than a minute, the result wasn’t a fluke—Krifchin is an accomplished road racer who was 13th (and first American) in the 2012 world half marathon championships.

Of course, she’ll probably have to run a lot faster than 2:33 to make the Olympic team. Rather than being in uncharted territory of 2:25 marathon pace from the start, Krifchin will fare best in a race that starts conservatively and concludes with a faster second half.

Fun fact: Shoes & Gear.
